Prayer for Unity and Peace
Through a personal commitment to God’s word.
Weekly prayer of February 27, 2005.
At The Way Ministries…John 14:6 everything is done in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Our Father and our God in heaven. Hallowed be Your name. We thank You LORD for another week and for the opportunity to seek further guidance on how to understand and experience unity and peace. Last week I indicated that worldly things pull most people away from You. Since then I discovered that worldly things are not the only things that pull people away from You. I found that the Old Testament teachings and the seeming incongruity of the teachings and practices of the Church also tend to pull people away from You. While one individual expressed boredom and discouragement when they read the Old Testament, another found the Old Testament teachings to be rather cruel coming from You, causing them to have some doubts about the kind of God that You are.
In one instance, one individual continued to believe in You and continued to be active in their worshipping community regardless of how they were impacted by Your word. In another instance, although the individual grew up in Church they were still not sure if they believed or didn’t believe in You based on how they were impacted by Your word and by the Church. Although I didn’t get the same impression that they got from reading Your word, yet, recently, as I read sections of “Leviticus” that addressed the penalties for breaking the law, and penalties for immorality and blasphemy, I wondered if the language and the penalties were part of the distraction and discouragement for these individuals. And if so, will You LORD, please say something that might help all to better understand Your word?
As I waited on the LORD He guided me to several verses in “Leviticus” where after instructing Moses on what to say to the children of Israel closed with the phrase “I am the LORD your God.” LORD, if that is Your response to the impact of the Old Testament on some individuals what about the impact of the teachings and practices of the Church on others? I asked. In response the LORD led me to Matthew 5:14-16 where Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
Upon reading that I asked the LORD to help us seek unity and peace with Him and with the Church and to help us be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22 ). In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
